Thorshofn, (North East, Iceland) is a small fishing village that also serves the surrounding rural farming area. It is probably the best place in Iceland to experience what it is like to live in an isolated village almost 60 miles, 100 km from the next village. Around 400 people live in the village itself.
You can fly from Reykjavik, changing planes in Akureyri, rent a car in Thorshofn and make day trips from there, to places like Myvatn, Dettifoss, Asbyrgi, Husavik, Vopnafjordur, Raufarhofn, Kopasker and last but not least the Langanes Peninsula. Thorshofn is located on the Langanes Peninsula in a fjord called Thistilfjordur. The balcony at Hotel Jorvik or the sea shore is a great place to enjoy the view across the fjord and the midnight sun.
You will find all the amenities in Thorshofn you might expect to find in a bigger town. Hotel. Restaurant. Convenience food. Swimming Pool with jacuzzi tubs and sauna. A bar. A liqueur store, general store and other stores. Community hall. Guided tours. Sea Angling and boat excursions. Horseback riding. Salmon and trout fishing and more.
Hotel Jorvik Double Room. Minimum bid U$67. To make a bid send an email to auction@rvik.com stating your bid, number of people, arrival and departure date. If you need a rental car we can help arrange one for you. The Langanes Peninsula is one of the very best places in Iceland to explore the bird life. There you will find lots of different birds. To name some: Puffin, Artic Turn, Oystercatcher, Great Blackbacked gull, Wooper Swan, Red Necked Phalarope, Redshank, Snipe, Golden Plover, Whimbrel, Goose, Redwing, Gannet, Eider, Merlin, Gyrfalcon, Rock Ptarmigan, Ringed Plover, Sanderling, Dunlin, Artic Skua, Great Skua, Black-headed Gull, Iceland Gull, Kittiwake, Green-winged Teal, Mallard, Raven, Fulmar, Great Cormorant, Red-breasted Merganser, Snow Bunting, Razorbill, Black Guillemot, Common Guillemot, Thick-billed Murre, Dovekie, Purple Sandpiper, Red Knot, Ruddy Turnstone, Black-tailed Godwit, Herring Gull, Glaucous Gull, Eurasian Wigeon, Greater Scaup, Oldsquaw, Meadow Pipit, White Wagtail, Winter Wren, Wheatear, Fieldfare, Blackbird, Redpoll, Goosander, Red-throaded Diver and loon.
Myvatn has more types of ducks than the rest of Iceland combined. Around Myvatn there is geothermal activity and natural places where you can swim, naturally if you like.
Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe with over 20 tones of water flowing per second.
In Husavik you can go on whale watching excursions.
The name Thorshofn is the harbor of Thor. Thor is the thundergod. His wives name is Sif. Thor is the son of Odin the most powerful god. Odins horse Sleipnir put one of its eight feet down in Asbyrgi, hence the horseshoe shape. It is a must to visit the ponds in Asbyrgi on your way to Dettifoss.
